Adam Blumer's Impossible Dream

Adam Blumer knows the peaks and valleys of the publishing industry.

I remember these words from my boss clearly. “We’re making cutbacks here at the college, and I’m afraid”—he took a deep breath and let it out—“your position is being eliminated.” It was January 13, 2006, and I was sitting in my office at Northland Baptist Bible College (now Northland International University). Yep, you got it—I was being laid off from my editorial position after working there for more than a decade.

In the meantime, I’d finished a suspense novel called Now You See Him and had recently queried literary agent Steve Laube about it. One week after my layoff notice, I heard back from Steve in the form of a two-page letter. He felt that the manuscript was very close to being ready for publication but needed to improve in a few key areas, which he kindly itemized.

I was elated by this news. I was so close yet so far away. The reality of my layoff eclipsed any publishing aspirations. Five months later I was working part-time FedEx, editing various projects from home, and trying to make ends meet. I literally had no time to write. God taught me that I needed to put my publishing dream on hold and focus on the more important task of providing for my family. It was a difficult time, but I learned the meaning of surrendering to His plans.

Fast-forward to the spring of 2007. I had finally made the revisions Steve Laube had recommended and was looking for a publisher. I contacted Kregel Publications, looking for editorial work I could do from home. An editor there noticed on my resume that I had mentioned several unpublished novel manuscripts. He asked me to submit my latest project, and the rest, as they say, is history. Fatal Illusions, my debut novel, was released in March 2009. Recently, I released my second suspense novel, The Tenth Plague, through Kirkdale Press.

I wish I could say my publishing journey has been easy. My road is still bumpy and uncertain at times, but I’m glad I know The Engineer. I can certainly trust His plan for my life.

You're the winner, Andrew! So sorry I'm late with this announcement. I was in the U.P. visiting my grandkids and then I had a long travel day to get back home. God bless and...enjoy Adam's e-book!
